Join industry veterans Ward Lindhout and Marthe Jonkers in this 2-day workshop as they guide you through the ideation and workflows essential for crafting realistic and futuristic cybercities. Learn new techniques and thought processes that will elevate your artwork to new heights.

Ward Lindhout is a senior concept artist at IO Interactive. He embarked on his concept art journey in the vibrant metropolis of Tokyo, where he worked on Shinji Mikami's The Evil Within. Staying with the survival horror genre, he then moved to Capcom to visualize the chilling settings of Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 2. A passion for everything cyberpunk made him move to Krakow, and at CD Projekt Red, he visualized the cybercity backdrops for Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty. Ward now resides in Malmö, Sweden, where he is concepting for Project 007.

Originally from the Netherlands, Marthe Jonkers is currently working as an associate art director at Ubisoft Massive. Her career took her all over the world, starting in Japan, where she helped visualize the worlds of Dragon’s Dogma and Monster Hunter World at Capcom. After six years Marthe exchanged the neon lights of Osaka for the historical charm of Krakow, and worked with her concept team on designing entire cybercities for Cyberpunk 2077 and its expansion, Phantom Liberty. Marthe currently resides in Sweden where she spends her time shaping the visual universe of Star Wars: Outlaws.

  • DAY 1: Lecture

During this first day, we will give an introduction of our work and experiences, and we’ll dive deeper into the thematics and research that go into concepting urban worlds for video games.

  • DAY 2: Demo

On the second day, we will demonstrate different steps to creating a futuristic cityscape. We’ll show workflow examples and techniques to create the building blocks of a sprawling megacity. We’ll end this day with an assignment where artists can apply the knowledge and know-how that was demonstrated during the workshop.

  • DAY 3: online session

A few weeks after the workshop, we’ll have an online session where artists can show their work on the assignment and have the opportunity to receive feedback and tips.
